What embroidery file format do Brother embroidery machines use?

Brother embroidery machines use the PES file format. So, make sure if you purchase or download any free embroidery designs for Brother machines that this file type is included! We’ve curated a list of free designs for you below that you can use too – all of which have PES files.

Creative Fabrica is a GREAT site to get all kinds of free downloadable embroidery designs for brother. They have hundreds of free designs from multiple designers, which also rotate, so there is always something new.

Each download page will tell you what formats are available, but pretty much all designs will come with PES format for Brother machines, AND in multiple sizes usually too! The screenshot above shows a few examples of their freebies.

Jen’s Originals offers quite a few great, free designs – with a couple of limitations. They are all 4 x4 in size for the most part, and only available in PES. Thankfully, that’s the file type you need if you have a Brother machine! However, if you’d like a larger version of the design, you can pay a bit to the creator to get it. Ann The Gran has quite a few nice free Christmas designs available. Be aware though that some of them are only “free” if you join the member’s club which has a monthly fee. Yet again, Embroidnew offers some great freebies for owners of Brother embroidery machines. Though not quite as extensive or varied as the Christmas or Halloween selection. You can see some of them above, but click through to the site to view them all.

Grand Slam Designs Freebies

Grand Slam has some nice Easter designs, as well as other holidays or general themes as well. BUT, they do limit how many you can download. It’s only 3 per week unless you buy something – so choose carefully! Click here to see all of the designs.

This site has quite a few freebies, BUT you must create an account to download them, AND some of them are “subscription only”. This means you’ll have to poke around to find the actual free stuff, but they do have some good designs. Click here to get the bunny design above!

Embroideres Community Forum Designs

Embroiders forums are a great place to find free designs if you don’t mind looking around! This forum has TONS of free files which community members upload. The floral designs above are an example, but you can find pretty much anything here. Just use “free” in the search box.

However, some designs may NOT have PES files (the files for Brother) available. So, make sure to read the description first. Click here to search for more designs.
