How to use these designs
Need help with using your new designs? If you’ve never downloaded free machine embroidery designs off the internet before, it can be confusing at first. All of our designs are ready to embroider, but there are a few steps to take before you can get started on your holiday fun!
Find a design you like
Step one is to choose a design! You can simply click on a design’s image above to go to the download page. On each download page you’ll find a description of the design, which file formats are included, and what sizes are included. All designs are distributed in a zip file that contains all of the sizes and formats listed in the design description, so you’ll get all of them automatically. Our designs come in PES, JEF, and DST file types by default as these will work for the majority of machines on the market.
Just click the big green “download now” button to get the design. No registration is required, and you can download as many designs as you like. We don’t place download limitations on our visitors. We want you to be free to create cool stuff!!
Unzip the embroidery files
Zip files are handy for sharing multiple files, but you need to unzip the compressed folder before you can use what’s inside! This is super easy though, and your computer already has what you need to get this task done.
Just right click on the compressed folder and a little menu should pop up. Scroll down on the menu until you find the text “extract all”. Click on it and you should be asked where to extract the files. Just click okay, and it will extract to wherever the zipped folder is. A new folder will open up showing you what’s inside. Your files are unzipped ready to go!
Find the right file type
Different embroidery machines use different embroidery file formats. You need to make sure you’re using the correct file type for your machine or the designs may not show on your embroidery machine! If you have a Brother or Baby Lock machine, you’ll want to use PES. If you have a Janome machine you’ll want to use JEF. DST is also included which can be used by some home use machines as well.
Not the right file type for your machine? Here’s how to change it to one you can use.
Transfer files to the USB stick
You’ll likely need to use a USB stick to transfer the files to your machine. Plug the USB into your computer and a message should pop up asking what you want to do with the drive! Choose to open it up and you’ll have a folder.
Drag and drop the embroidery files you unzipped into this folder. They will be copied to the drive, and you’ll then be able to eject the USB and begin transferring them over to your embroidery machine.
Move the files to the embroidery machine
Once the designs are on the USB, you’ll need to move them to the embroidery machine. The process for this differs depending on what type of machine you have, so you’ll likely need to consult your machine’s user manual for the instructions. If you have a Janome machine, the instructions for transferring files can be found here.
